Cities are Competing to be Amazon's Second Headquarters

Memphis may not be a real serious player in the sweepstakes to land Amazon's second headquarters, but the city is certainly trying to become one. The Stonecrest location is less than 30 miles from the Atlanta International Airport and Lary said it would be possible to extend rail service to Stoncrest from the airport if Amazon chooses the city.

"There are several major USA cities that want Amazon, but none has the branding opportunity we are now offering this visionary company", said Jason Lary, the mayor of Stonecrest, Ga., according to Newsweek.

Still, The New York Times ran a slew of cities through the gamut, trying to identify which city would be ideal for Amazon's new headquarters.

On Monday, the Stonecrest City Council adopted a resolution supporting the concept to de-annex a portion of its city limits as an incentive for the Seattle-based company to relocate in metro Atlanta.

In the call for submissions, Amazon said HQ2 would require 165 acres of land, proximity to an global airport, public transportation, and a high standard of living for employees. They had pledged to create 50,000 jobs over a span of 10-15 years and more than $5 billion in construction.

In 1959, Japanese city Koromo changed its name to Toyota city, which houses many manufacturing plants and facilities of the Toyota Motor Corporation. And Birmingham, Ala., planted several giant Amazon-style shipping boxes around the city to coincide with the mayor's official bid for the headquarters.

Stonecrest is located 20 miles (30 kilometers) east of Atlanta, and is home to about 53,000 residents.

The city council president said Springfield as a standalone city wouldn't meet amazon's requirements, but the greater region would.

It also brings to mind Japan's Toyota City, which was once a thriving economic area which those fresh from college aimed to work in, at least before the global recession seriously impacted sales.
