Facebook's Messenger Lite app is officially available in Canada, Report

However Lite version of its messenger App is now available for users in several countries such as US and UK. Messenger Lite eliminates some of the newer and more processor-heavy features in the traditional Facebook Messenger app. However, that situation has now changed, at least for Android users. However, this week Facebook made the app available to everyone Australia using an Android device (unfortunately there's no iOS version) as well. The senior officials also told that the app would utilize much less data connection as matched to other social networking sites or applications. Originally, Messenger Lite rolled out to 5 countries when it launched in 2016.

Weighing in at just 10MB, Messenger Lite offers the fore Messenger experience without all of the unnecessary bloat.

You won't be able to video chat through Messenger Lite while the chat heads feature that pops up over the top of other apps won't happen when using this version either.

Though it may be harder to monetize Messenger Lite users, it's worth it for Facebook since chat is the center of the mobile use case.

Users can use the message thread to send voice notes and photos, but it lacks editing features that are found on the regular version of the app.

The app is available on the Google Play Store, and it is compatible with Android devices that are running on as low as Android 2.3 Gingerbread. In high economy markets, however, Messenger Lite will quickly run into tough competition from the likes of Snapchat. Because, if users find that Lite is fast and providing quick responses they will prefer Messenger instead of returning back to the SMS or iMessage, or staying to Snapchat.

Still, Messenger Lite could appeal to a certain subset of users with limited financial resources to keep the Internet tap open, a.k.a. teens.
