Los Alamos County Council Proclaims October Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Kentucky Coalition Against Domestic Violence also runs an Economic Empowerment Project that helps survivors become self-sufficient.

"Not only is she passionate in advocating for needed programs and services, but she also spends countless hours in helping others through education and outreach".

Matthews-Creech says the vigil and month-long campaign raises awareness by bridging the gap to conversations about an issue that does not show prejudice to one demographic or region. "If you have one case of domestic violence it's too much, and certainly we see too much of it in the Marquette County area", says Detective Capt. Mike Kohler of the Marquette Police Dept. She said it has given her the opportunity to provide support to all the programs that cater to the needs of children, parents, the youth, senior citizens and individuals with special needs.

"It feels great", she said.

The center says it is the first year the church has hosted the services.

Parker also said NY is the number-one state in the country for domestic violence. "We can end violence now and it takes all of us to create a safe and loving community". Matthews-Creech says the vigil honors the strength of survivors, remembers victims, and reminds those that are now living with abuse that there is help out there for them.

The Center for Family Justice, with the support of Easton community leaders and law enforcement, has scheduled a vigil to mark the observance of Domestic Violence Awareness Month for Wednesday, Oct. 11. "We need to find ways to add to the resources in our community to help those that are in need".

Last year's ceremony recognized 38 people killed by domestic violence in 2015.
