Facebook's Messenger Lite Android App Launched In Four Markets

It is estimated that there would be around 47 million times downloads since launch, led by India and Brazil.

Facebook Messenger Lite, a dialed down version of Facebook's chat app is expanding to the US, UK, Canada, and Ireland. Originally, Messenger Lite rolled out to 5 countries when it launched in 2016. However, Facebook has no plans as of now to introduce the app for iOS devices.

As many people have no access to 3G and 4G network coverage, this slimmed down app is essential for a company to broaden its market.

Initially, Facebook had only targeted the Messenger Lite app towards the markets in developing countries to counter the menace of spotty and slow internet connections. While both apps have since proven to be very popular, that didn't stop the social media juggernaut from releasing a Lite version of its chat app late a year ago, originally aimed at developing markets and low-end phones.

The Messenger Lite app uses simple and minimal visuals - which ensures that the app isn't heavy on graphics. This app should appeal more to teens since they have to make do with data caps and limited speed.

You won't be able to video chat through Messenger Lite while the chat heads feature that pops up over the top of other apps won't happen when using this version either. And where there are friends who can't use an app, people end up switching to one they can.

WhatsApp also has more than 1 billion users, and many people use both services. In addition to text messages, Messenger Lite still allows stickers and sending pictures and links, and carries the same design as Messenger.

Facebook Lite is an Android exclusive right now, and you can grab it over on Google Play.
