Wii Shop Channel closing down in 2019

The Wii Shop Channel includes Virtual Console titles, services such as Netflix and Hulu, and original "WiiWare" content from Nintendo and third parties.

Specifically, the closure is set for January 31, 2019. The digital store predated Nintendo's eShop, which is available for Nintendo 3DS, Wii U and Nintendo Switch. Presumably, that functionality will end sometime after the Wii Shop channel is shut down, but Nintendo doesn't have a solid date that particular wind down just yet. The shutdown will happen gradually: users will still be able to add Wii Points until March 26th, 2018, and still be able to use those points to purchase content until the shop fully goes offline in January 2019. The company indicated that it will also prevent Wii U users from entering and purchasing items in that shop. Consumers are unable to refund Wii Points purchases or convert them to the new currency. We sincerely thank our loyal customers for their support. With that our digital games will no longer be available for downloads.

If you already have a large library of Wii Shop Channel software, note that it's safe for now but not indefinitely. As of writing, the latest numbers put the consoles sales at more than 101 million worldwide. After this date users will no longer be able to buy titles or applications from the channel for the Wii or Wii U.
