Xbox One X's Intelligent Delivery shrinks game sizes

Microsoft is looking to fuel this need for urgency with a new method for installing and streaming games on the Xbox One called "Intelligent Delivery". Right now, Microsoft is only supporting two discs, but game developers wanting to use more can work that out with the company on a case-by-case basis.

Dividing content into chunks and tagging it will apply to gameplay-specific content too; players can delete game modes they're not using, for example. For FIFA games where the download is largely taken up by all of the various languages supported by the game, users would be able to delete all of them except the language they need. Digital Foundry uses the example of a level editor, that perhaps many players won't bother with, or the campaign in a multiplayer-focused title that you might never play again.

You can already see the data for this on your Xbox One via the Games & Apps menu. But Xbox has a very clever way to tackle this problem and reduce the download size for games.

Xbox One X supports 4K gaming and with that in mind, you can expect that game files to be huge. From a dev perspective, it means XBO/XBS users don't have to download 4K assets - because that can be assigned as a chunk just for the Xbox One X. Xbox One X intelligent delivery will notify you that there are 4K textures available for download. Backup the game to an external hard drive and plug it into the Xbox One X. Microsoft exec Mike Ybarra recently confirmed that users can pre-download 4K texture packs to prepare for the Xbox One X's launch. But what's impressive here is that the system of chunks and tags devised to address this challenge has been expanded out to offer space savings for many other scenarios unrelated to the arrival of the new console. They also got a glimpse of this new system in order to persuade them to adopt it for the upcoming titles.

In essence, Intelligent Delivery means that not only are games downloaded faster, but it has the potential to save gamers a ton of disc space that would otherwise be wasted.
