Pakistan wins independence cup against World XI

Pakistan celebrated the return of worldwide cricket to their country with a 2-1 win over the World XI in the three-match T20I series at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on Friday.

The skippers of either team have expressed their resolve to win the third and last crucial match after home-side beat the host team by 20 runs in the opening match.

For World XI, Sri Lanka's Thisara Perera scalped two wickets.

Update: Pakistan defeat World XI by 33 runs to clinch the Independence Cup. "We wanted to come here and play a small part in cricket coming back to Pakistan".

On Friday, the World XI, chasing a target of 184, never got going as they could manage to score only 150/8 in their 20 overs.

Pakistan vs World XI, 3rd T20, Lahore, will start at 7.30 pm IST on Friday. His 55-ball knock included eight boundaries and three sixes.

Ahmed Shehzad was the standout performer with a brilliant knock of 89 off just 55 balls during the third and final Twenty20 global match. But from thereon Ahmed Shehzad and Babar Azam steadied the ship as they put a 102 run-stand.

Earlier, PCB Chief Najam Sethi confirmed that the agreement with the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) has been finalised to play three-match Twenty20 series in Lahore that will be played at the end of November this year. "ICC will be extending help to Pakistan for the return of worldwide cricket and it will be persuading the other cricket playing nations to visit Pakistan in due course of time", said the ICC official. We know the security plans being enforced for the World XI matches are causing some inconvenience to the people. The series also marked another step towards revival of worldwide cricket in Pakistan.

Despite the International Cricket Council (ICC) pushing for more international cricket in Pakistan, Cricket Australia chief executive James Sutherland has ruled out the possibility of his side touring the country in the near future.

Pakistan hopes the successful staging of this series will help them host Sri Lanka for a Twenty20 worldwide on October 29, at the end of their full series in the United Arab Emirates.
