Eight dead in Florida nursing home following Hurricane Irma

At least eight people are dead and 100 more have been evacuated from a Florida nursing home after the facility lost power and temperatures soared to over 100 degrees inside.

The Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills evacuated more 115 residents Wednesday morning when a transformer powering the facility's air conditioning system experienced a failure as a result of the storm.

"A portion of the facility did, in fact, have power, that there was a hospital across the parking lot from this facility and that the nursing home was required to have a permanently installed operational generator", the power company spokesman Richard Beltran told CNN.

According to BBC, ten million people are still without power in Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas after Hurricane Irma.

The Keys were largely evacuated by the time Irma barreled ashore as a Category 4 hurricane with sustained winds of up to 215km/hour.

The Voice is celebrating its 35th birthday this year.

The death toll from Hurricane Irma is climbing with authorities reporting six patients at a Florida nursing home died after it had lost power, as millions struggle with no electricity and scarce essential services in the storm-hit state.

"As with millions of other Floridians, our centers are coping with the loss of power and infrastructure in the communities that were most affected by the devastation", the Florida Health Care Association said in a statement Wednesday.

At a news conference, Florida Power and Light said it serviced portions of the facility. He also would not state how long and how much of the building was without power, saying it was part of the criminal investigation. Though the facility has a generator, it was unclear if it was operational, and Broward County Mayor Barbara Sharief told reporters that the residents died from the lack of air conditioning.

"I am going to work to aggressively demand answers on how this tragic event took place", Governor Rick Scott said in a statement.

In the state of Florida, one in five residents is 65 or older. As a precautionary measure, police are checking the other 42 nursing homes and assisted living facilities in the city of Hollywood, Sanchez said. "This situation is unfathomable".

Later, Scott directed AHCA to issue an emergency moratorium for the facility, prohibiting it from admitting any patients until the order is lifted.

Irma caused about $25 billion in insured losses, including $18 billion in the United States and $7 billion in the Caribbean, catastrophe modeler Karen Clark & Co estimated on Wednesday.

President Donald Trump and his wife, Melania, were to visit Florida to survey the damage on Thursday.

People who fled their homes in hard-hit islands including St Martin and the US Virgin Islands that were all but cut off from the world for days arrived in San Juan late Tuesday.

"But we have life".
