JJ Abrams Will Write and Director Star Wars 9

Goodbye Colin Trevorrow, hello again, J.J. Abrams. So this is a sensible, fine move for the franchise.

"Episode IX" was the second "Star Wars" project to lose a director this year.

Abrams was coaxed into directing The Force Awakens by Kennedy after helming two successful Star Trek films for Paramount Pictures.

Following the shocking news that Trevorrow was sacked by Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy, Star Wars fans have been wondering who would take over to direct Star Wars Episode IX. The news was announced in a statement from the franchise on Tuesday morning. Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy confirmed the directorial change in a press release.

Walt Disney Co delayed the release of the ninth installment of the "Star Wars" saga to December 20, 2019 after announcing on Tuesday the return of filmmaker J.J. Abrams to the franchise to write and direct the movie. Star Wars: Episode IX is scheduled to follow on May 24, 2019. He'll continue the unforeseen events that will take place in The Last Jedi, and bring the Star Wars Universe back to the big screen before the end of the decade.

Trevorrow and Lucasfilm's Kathleen Kennedy reportedly clashed behind the scenes, with some insiders suggesting that the Jurassic World and Book of Henry director is a bit full of himself.

Abrams will co-write Episode IX, which is due to be released in 2019, with Argo screenwriter Chris Terrio. It is not now known whether J.J. Abrams will just pick up where Trevorrow left off or if he will prefer to scrap what has already been done and shape the sequel as he sees fit.

Though some are pretty happy and excited that Abrams is now in charge over Episode IX, fans believed that Lucasfilm would first try things out with Johnson.
