While hearing a petition filed by the Lokiti Foundation, the top court in February 2017 had asked the government to re-verify the phone numbers of all mobile phone users within a year.

There was an estimated 128 crore mobile phone connections in the country as of July and 33.8 crore SIM cards have either been issued or linked by telecom operators using Aadhaar e-KYC - which means up to 25% of mobile phone customers in India complying so far, reported in Economic Times. The decision was taken by a bench comprising of former Chief Justice J S Khehar and Justice N V Ramana said the verification of existing pre-paid mobile users, running into crores, be done within one year.

UIDAI is an agency of the Indian government which is responsible for implementing the Aadhaar scheme that aims to provide a unique identification number to all the people across the nation.

Earlier this year, the government also mandated the linking of Aadhaar with PAN cards for filing of income tax returns. In this case, one has to get their mobile number registered with UIDAI and this can only be done via UIDAI centres. Following the submission, biometrics will be verified at the enrollment centre. "In the near future, and more particularly, within one year from today, a similar verification will be completed, in the case of existing customers".

With Aadhar, if you are looking to link your mobile number there can have two scenarios.

A Govt. official said, "Online linking of mobile number has a security risk". After feeding OTP number and entering the phone number that a person want to link, the request will be processed. But for that you need have the existing number linked to your Aadhaar, functional and handy as the OTP to authenticate the updation would be sent to your existing number.

- Visit the UIDAI website and click on the "Aadhaar update" tab, which will redirect you to the Aadhaar self-service page. Hence the users who have not linked their aadhar number with the mobile number can proceed now. Now, enter the mobile number details.
