The Investigative Committee has opened criminal proceedings.

Eight hours after a deadly van attack on Thursday afternoon that left 13 people dead in Barcelona, an Audi A3 auto rammed into pedestrians in Cambrils, 120 kilometers (75 miles) south of Barcelona.

Russian authorities had earlier declined to comment on whether the incident was being treated as a terrorist attack.

The Islamic State's Aamaq news agency hours later claimed the attacker was "an Islamic State soldier".

According to the committee, the attacker was killed by security forces, who had immediately arrived at the scene.

Amateur video emerged from the scene, showing a policeman kneeling over the motionless body of the suspect. Two have already been discharged. Police initially fired a warning shot and attempted to arrest the attacker, but when he resisted, armed police "liquidated" him with gunfire, police explained to reporters.

The incident took place in a city some 2,100 kilometres northeast of Moscow in the oil-rich Khanty-Mansi region. As a result of the attack, two people were hospitalized in serious condition, and five more sustained moderately serious injuries.
