36 killed in Chinese road tunnel crash

At least 36 people died and 13 were injured in a road accident that occurred in northwestern China shortly before midnight, media reported Friday.

A long-distance passenger bus crashed into the wall of an expressway tunnel in China's northwest.

Accounts of the accident by the official Xinhua news agency did not indicate whether any other vehicles were involved.

The injured were sent to the hospital and rescue efforts were ongoing.

The bus was carrying 49 passengers on its way to Luoyang from the city of Chengdu.

Pictures of the aftermath show the front of the bus completely smashed in.

Deadly road accidents are common in China, notes the BBC.

Traffic law violations caused nearly 90 per cent of the road accidents where people died or were injured in 2015, with the total number of such infractions reaching an astonishing 442 million.
