What OpenAI Victory in Dota 2 Means for the Future of eSports

Artificial Intelligence is now one topic, about which people are really divided and quite skeptical.

Elon Musk may be terrified of artificial intelligence (AI) and spreading a message of AI-led doom, but that hasn't stopped him from funding companies that are developing advanced AI.

Or, as Musk puts it, to ensure that AI doesn't grow unchecked and become the death of humanity. Over the past week, our bot was undefeated against many top professionals including SumaiL (top 1v1 player in the world) and Arteezy (top overall player in the world).

Dendi later elaborated on Twitter that he found the bot "fun" and "challenging" to play against. The bot learned the game from scratch by self-play, and does not use imitation learning or tree search. But it's important to note that the bot was playing Dendi in a one versus one match, a heavily stripped down version of the full, team-based game where many, numerous variables in play are removed. At a certain level, most pros are good enough to find strategies and weaknesses in the bot's play style that they can exploit and beat the bots easily. And rather than attempt a third round, Dendi surrendered.

Then, Brockman said, it was time to put the bot to the test at The International, which is Dota 2's world championship. Earlier this year, an AI built by Microsoft beat every level of the Ms. Pac-Man game - something no human player has ever achieved.

What's particularly impressive about the feat is that winning in Dota tasks players with building intuition about what their opponents will do, and building a corresponding game plan. "Vastly more complex than traditional board games like chess & Go", tweeted Musk.

A video introduction for the bot showed various (human) Dota 2 players sharing their opinions on bots.

The implications, of course, are that a bot that can master complex video games can have other uses too.
