Manchester duo poised to challenge Chelsea for title — Slater

Such an effort provoked scenes of sheer jubilation at the Emirates Stadium and came just two minutes after fellow substitute Aaron Ramsey looked to have rescued a point for the inconsistent Gunners after blasting in from close range.

With 65 minutes on the clock Wenger turned to Ramsey and Giroud, the former almost making an instant impact by narrowly missing the target when getting on the end of a left-sided cross.

However, Wenger insists that Giroud will remain in north London beyond the end of the transfer window despite being given the opportunity to move on and seek more regular football elsewhere.

Giroud appears willing - if a little reluctantly - to accept his role as an understudy to Lacazette.

The 30-year-old striker has been linked with West Ham United, Everton and Marseille since the arrival of club-record signing Lacazette. Arsenal have not lost any of their seven Premier League games played on a Friday, coming out on top in six such contests.

Wenger was also without three of his top centre-backs on the pitch - suspended Laurent Koscielny, injured Per Mertesacker and Shkodran Mustafi, who remained on the bench - and said the defensive mistakes can be ironed out quickly. "Mesut Ozil ... we have plenty of the same type of players".

"I'm very pleased for the team and hope we can carry on".

"So we conceded two goals from corner, we were quite good last season on corners". I see that every day in training.

It's enough to make you breathless just reading about it, isn't it?

"Even if people will say, OK we conceded three goals".

As always is the case, Arsenal begin their 2017-18 Premier League campaign with high hopes.

Expectations at both clubs vary, but there is similar pressure on both managers to deliver much better results this season. He adapts slowly to the way we want to play.

"I opened the door for him, because I knew we had many strikers, but he's really loved here and he decided to stay".

'Have we made a bid for him?
