49ers notes: Shanahan fears Malcolm Smith injury is long term

In losing the presumed starter at weak-side linebacker, the 49ers will now be tasked with finding Smith's replacement. Don't know for sure.

The 49ers signed Smith as a free agent in March to a five-year, $26.2 million contract, including $13 million in guaranteed money. Smith was expected to help transition to the new 4-3 scheme that's similar to what he ran with Seattle.

According to Kevin Jones of KNBR, Garnett's leg was wrapped and he walked gingerly, suggesting he could be forced to miss some time. In April, San Francisco selected Foster with the 31 choice in the NFL Draft. The injury opens up an opportunity for rookie linebacker Reuben Foster to immediately move up the depth chart and get more practice reps as the team prepares for the 2017 season. Foster ascended to work with the second team this week after missing team drills throughout the spring while recovering on surgery to fix a torn rotator cuff in his right shoulder.

Also listed on the injury report was linebacker Malcolm Smith.

Veteran Ray-Ray Armstrong is also an option.

"They're both smart, they're both athletic".

The San Francisco 49ers have been relatively lucky on the injury front this training camp.

"There's some stuff in his knee we're probably going to have to clean up", Shanahan said, via Eric Branch of SFGate.com. "I think at linebacker you have to smart, patient, know when you can shoot your gun and go make those plays".

Garnett, who has been working with the first-team offense at left guard, is dealing with a left knee that could require a "clean-up" type of surgery.
