President, PM salute martyrs on Kargil Vijay Diwas

Drass (J and K), July 26 (ANI): Commemorating Kargil Vijay Diwas, a wreath laying ceremony was held to pay tribute to soldiers, who lost their lives in Kargil War, at the Drass War Memorial in Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday.

Later on, with the support of the Indian Air Force, the Indian Army recaptured a majority of the positions on the Indian side of the LOC infiltrated by the Pakistani troops and militants. In a tweet, Modi said Kargil Vijay Diwas reminds us of India's military prowess and the great sacrifices our armed forces make while steadfastly keeping India safe.

The war which lasted more than 60 days, ended on July 26 with the Indian Army regaining possessions of Kargil.

Talking about his experiences from the war, General J.J. Singh said: "I distinctly remember the way our soldiers fought at Kargil".

He wrote on Twitter, "On #KargilVijayDiwas, let's salute our heroes".

The film, that had an ensemble cast of Sanjay Dutt, Ayyub Khan, Ajay Devgn, Suniel Shetty, Saif Ali Khan and Abhishek Bachchan, had many incidents which stayed with him.

Prior to 2010, Vijay Diwas celebrations were conducted largely by the defence forces and the government wasn't seen leading the event.

In this connection, a memorial function was organised in memory of Captain Neikezhakuo Kenguruse, who laid down his life in the line of duty for the nation in Kargil war and for which he was awarded the mahavir chakra (posthumously), at his memorial at Pheza, near his native village Nerhema.

India today celebrates 18th Kargil Vijay Diwas which was named after the success of Operation Vijay. Saluting the courage and valour of the soldiers, she said the nation is extremely proud of the armed forces personnel who made the supreme sacrifices.
