Mark Hamill remembers Carrie Fisher at D23 Expo 2017

Hosted by the Chairman and CEO of the Walt Disney company, Bob Iger, the event honoured 10 stars who have contributed to the legacy of Disney.

The 3-day ultimate Disney fan event, D23 Expo, kicked off Friday at Anaheim Convention Center, Southern California, with the reveal of winners of the 2017 Disney Legends Awards. "To think that today I'm standing here in the house that Disney built, and we've paid tribute to Jack - it's so thrilling I can't tell you".

"I wish I could be there to accept this award on her behalf, but unfortunately, I am now working on 'American Horror Story, '" her speech concluded. Of her mother's new status as a Disney Legend, Lourd said, "We went to Disneyland so much that I now realize that she might have even loved it more than I did". The 94-year-old Marvel comic book icon was the only award recipient who actually got to meet Walt Disney. Since Fisher wasn't able to accept it herself, her daughter Billie Lourd wrote an acceptance speech on her behalf, E!

Fisher became an overnight sensation in 1977 with her iconic performance as Leia but took on a panoply of roles as an actress, author, playwright, screenwriter and outspoken advocate for mental health awareness. Lourd went on to explain that for Fisher becoming a Disney Legend was nearly as good as being a Disney Princess. "We'd have huge fights - 'You're such a phony!' - but we loved each other".

Fisher's on-screen brother, Mark Hamill, was also inducted as a Disney Legend, using his time at the podium to honor the actress. "I know if she were here this morning, she would have flipped me the bird at least twice already". He explained, 'there was a comfort level with each other. They said "Oh we're giving you this thing" and I was like "Oh ok thanks" and they were like "No, you don't understand".
