IPhone 8 Could Feature Rear-Facing 3D Sensor For Augmented Reality

Fast Company reports that Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) hopes to add rear-facing 3D laser technology to one of this year's iPhones to continue the company's push into augmented reality. By including hardware with specific AR features, the iPhone 8 - or whatever device that includes the rear-facing 3D laser system - will be able to do more with the apps created by developers who tap into ARKit.

Apple engineers are working to bring 3D laser to the iPhone 8, but if they fail to achieve it before the device's release, it could be postponed for the next version of the iPhone.

The iPhone 8 is also rumoured to come with an updated dual camera setup at the rear with an improved telephoto lens, 3D sensing capabilities and as mentioned above, AR and depth of field features. The report also states that Lumentum, Finisar and II-VI (two-six) are supplying new sensors for the iPhone 8. While some analysts anticipate that the device will arrive in stores sometime in late September, the most recent whispers from the rumor mill are pointing towards a release sometime in mid-late October. "VCSEL laser systems calculate the distance the light travels from the laser to the target and back to the sensor, and generate a Time of Flight (TOF) measurement". The source suggests that the main issue in this case is integrated the laser system into the iPhone, rather than the system itself. Sources claim the system will cost about $2 per phone. The application, first filed in December 2013, details lends credence to rumours that the facial recognition system on the iPhone 8 may replace Touch ID fingerprint scanning.

In addition to the augmented reality benefits, the 3D system will make for "a more accurate type of autofocus for photography".

Apart from the iPhone 8, Apple is also expected to launch iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus that are likely to be modest upgrades over the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus.
