He also proposed forming a joint women's hockey team.

South Korea on Monday expressed its anticipation of a positive response from the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) over its proposal to form a unified team in the 2018 Winter Olympics.

Mr Do, who stressed the importance of the Olympics as the first major global sporting event for the new administration, said the North's participation in the games should help make Pyeongchang a "Peace Olympics", a term used by President Moon Jae In during his election campaign.

The largest world taekwondo competition to date kicked off Saturday with President Moon Jae-in's congratulatory speech embodying his wishes to restore inter-Korean dialogue through cross-border cooperation for the upcoming winter games.

South Korea and North Korea fielded joint teams at the 1991 World Table Tennis Championships and the 1991 FIFA World Youth Championship.

The Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea, will take place from 9-25 February.

In South Korea, however, NBC would not be inviting guests to the Games and would instead be hosting them in the USA ski town of Jackson Hole, Wyoming, Zenkel said.

Meanwhile, Yonhap News Agency quoted the minister as saying during the visit that North Korea's participation in the games would help make the 2018 Pyeongchang event a "Peace Olympics", a term used by Moon during his election campaign.

"That is not something the two sides can decide", said Mr Jang told reporters, when he was asked about North Korea potentially hosting Olympic events.

South Korea's sports officials said they remained receptive to the idea of competing together, however.

"There are obviously geopolitical issues", Zenkel said, speaking by telephone.

Despite hostile relations on the peninsula, South and North Korea do have a strong sporting history, particularly with regard to football.

Pyongyang boycotted the 1986 Asian Games and the 1988 Olympics, which were both held in Seoul, but has since taken part in worldwide sports competitions south of the border, most recently the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon. "The Olympic movement is always about building bridges, never about erecting walls", said an IOC spokesperson.
