Kevin Harvick wins at Sonoma for 1st victory of season

Before Truex started to experience the power issue with his Furniture Row/Denver Mattress Toyota, he was leading Sunday's NASCAR Cup Series race when he came in for his final pit stop on Lap 70.

NHRA: Steve Torrence raced to his fourth Top Fuel victory of the season, beating Doug Kalita in the Summit Racing Equipment Nationals in Norwalk, Ohio.

"We know we're capable of winning races at any type of racetrack and confident in each other in what we do", said Harvick after his 36th career victory in what is now the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series and his first on the highly technical road circuit at Sonoma. With an eight second lead over second place, Harvick was able to be on cruise control and picked up the win for the Stewart-Hass Racing team.

Bowyer, now the driver for the entry Tony Stewart used for his final NASCAR victory a year ago at the track, was second and Brad Keselowski third as Ford cars went 1-2-3. Coupled with Kurt Busch's season-opening Daytona 500 victory, Stewart-Haas now has two drivers qualified for the postseason.

At Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, Scott Dixon won the IndyCar race at Road America to spoil the Team Penske party on the rural road course.

Harvick collected the checkered flag and won the Toyota Save / Mart 350 at Sonoma. "He had a great vehicle, and once he fell out, I felt like we were 100 percent in control of the race, no matter what had happened, whether it was old tires or new tires". He led a race-high 99 laps in the Truck race Friday night. Despite loosing an engine on lap 86 and finishing 37th, Truex remains second in the standings.

With his first win of the season, Harvick is essentially locked into the playoffs.

Harvick was sitting second by lap 42 and raced to second place in Stage 2. Because Joey Logano's win at Richmond is considered encumbered and not recognized as a playoff qualifying win.

Bowyer sits 11th in the points and 16th in the playoff standings, the last spot now available on points.

A seven-time victor past year in the Truck Series, Byron, broke through just a week after an agonizingly close loss to Denny Hamlin at MI.

Ryan Newman: A win at Phoenix early locked Newman into the NASCAR playoffs, as he now sits behind Kurt Busch at 15th in the regular season standings.

But with the addition of Clint Bowyer, it's pretty clear that isn't the case.

Starting from the No. 12 position, Harvick quickly showed he had enough auto to be considered a favorite.

It was Ford's seventh victory of the season. Now one of the veteran drivers in the Monster Energy Cup Series, he hoped to rekindle some of that old magic as well as shine some refreshed light on the series and it's young drivers. He is now only winless at Texas, Pocono, and Kentucky Speedway.

Sieg, also in search of his first win, was on Byron's tail on the final restart and almost overtook him.

The race's second stage featured a unusual moment when Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and Danica Patrick, NASCAR's most-famous couple off the track, had a hard collision. Earnhardt had already announced he would run some Xfinity Series races. "We had a really fast auto and when you have a vehicle that runs that fast; it's really fun to drive". Just really proud of everybody. "They were all dive-bombing each other and then the 10 (Patrick) got spinning and I tried to go low and she just kept coming down the track. Hopefully, I am on the list of guys they would call".

Bowyer, who finished the 2007 Daytona 500 upside down, on fire and uninjured, said the exponential advances in safety might be luring people into believing the sport has become 100-percent safe. His vehicle promoted Disney's Cars 3 movie, and was painted to resemble the cocky car-character competing for the Piston Cup in the Pixar films (the voice is provided by Owen Wilson). "It was interesting listening to some of the (Joe) Gibbs (Racing) drivers and the gamesmanship they were playing as they pitted and came back out and then immediately started screaming debris on the racetrack", winning auto owner Tony Stewart said in the media center at Sonoma.
