Castroneves leads Penske march at Road America qualifying

For all of Castroneves' qualifying prowess over the years, this was his first pole at Road America, a road course which has hosted IndyCar races 26 times since 1982. Dixon won at Watkins Glen and the series will visit Gateway Motorsports Park for the first time since 2003.

New Zealander Scott Dixon has won the IndyCar race at Road America, with Australia's defending champion Will Power finishing fifth on the rural road course in Wisconsin.

Dixon edged Josef Newgarden by 0.57 seconds to claim his first victory at Road America.

"Toward the end, I thought it was a straight-up battle", Dixon said. "So pumped for the whole team".

"I'm happy I got the visa", Aleshin said.

Honda cars: Do they have anything for the Chevrolets, specifically Team Penske? Power wins the race under caution. "We did have the fastest lap, that's pretty cool, but just disappointed we didn't get it done". "We missed that one. It's really a shame we didn't bring a win for the team". "Everything went just right". It's a tough track for us with the aero configuration on the Honda kit.

NHRA: Steve Torrence raced to his fourth Top Fuel victory of the season Sunday, beating Doug Kalita in the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals in Norwalk, Ohio. He and Graham Rahal are also the only drivers with more than one win in 2017.

Newgarden overtook Castroneves in the final pit stops, moving just behind Dixon after Brazil's Tony Kanaan crashed to set up a restart with seven laps remaining.

The safety auto was deployed on Lap 12 to allow Daniil Kvyat's stricken Toro Rosso to be recovered after an engine issue, sparking the lead drivers to dive into the pits. Penske drivers had swept the top four spots in Saturday's qualifying and stayed up front Sunday with only Dixon breaking them up.

Power dropped to sixth place a couple laps later when he was penalized for blocking Pagenaud. "Everyone was aggressive and it was hard racing, but we came out with a seventh-place finish and moved up a little bit in the points, so we'll definitely take that". The four Penske drivers qualified in the top four spots Saturday, including Helio Castroneves winning his 50 career pole, setting up what looked like to be a sure win Sunday. Once out front, the newest member of Team Penske began to pull away.

Bottas led qualifying and then set an even quicker time on his final lap - only for Hamilton to beat him by almost half a second.

Scott Dixon's winless season is no more.

The result is a near flawless match of the new championship standings, which goes Dixon (379 points), Penske, Penske, Takuma Sato, Penske, Penske.

Dixon started fifth in the field and made a pass of Newgarden on the 31st lap. Castroneves also moved past Newgarden for second place.

In Q3, Bottas went close to clipping the wall on Turn 8, and Vettel took an exit road and spun after a braking error. By Lap 33, he was 3-seconds ahead of pole-sitter Castroneves.

Combined with Honda's resurgence this season - six victories vs. just two during all of previous year - there's a clear and compelling case to be made that this season has been more balanced.

Popular veteran driver Tony Kanaan hit the wall hard after contact with Alexander Rossi's auto damaged Kanaan's front wing.

On the restart, which came with seven laps to do, Dixon was flawless and kept his lead. Newgarden saved an oversteer moment through Turn 1 but on slower tyres he was compromised, and Castroneves eventually demoted him into Turn 5.

Hamilton managed to make a clean getaway from pole position to retain his lead ahead Mercedes teammate Bottas and Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen, only for contact between the two to leave both cars with damage. At the white flag, it was.6 seconds. Dixon has now won on 11 of the 16 circuits on this year's schedule.
