GOP senators now oppose health care bill as written

The GOP's new health bill would mean Nevada can not afford to maintain coverage for the 210,000 residents insured under Medicaid expansion, Gov. Brian Sandoval says.

Next week, the U.S. Senate will consider the "Better Care Reconciliation Act", (BCRA), its version of legislation to "repeal and replace" the Affordable Care Act (a.k.a. "Obamacare" or the ACA).

Majority Leader Mitch McConnell wants the bill to come to a vote by July 4th.

If the bill passes, Schumer told Newsday, Long Island could see an estimated $1 billion in Medicaid cuts over the next four years, out of about a $7 billion hit statewide.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Republican Sen.

Sen. Susan Collins of ME says she thinks getting the votes needed in the Senate this week to pass a Republican bill to replace the Affordable Care Act could be very hard.

The proposed Republican health care bill released by Senate leadership this week will "kill Massachusetts" without addressing any of the real flaws in Obamacare, Congressman Stephen Lynch said yesterday.

McConnell has acknowledged that he's willing to change the measure before it's voted on.

I'm fighting to make sure everyone in Hawaii and across the country can afford the quality health care that might one day save their life.

"It's not the answer, it's simply not the answer", Heller said.

The bill also would reduce or eliminate subsidies for millions of Americans on the exchange, subsidies that allow them to have insurance, stay healthy and keep working. Former President Obama weighed in on BCRA as well, saying that it's "not a health care bill" and criticizing the "fundamental meanness at the core of this legislation".

Speaking at Bellevue Hospital Center in Manhattan, the New York Democrat said the draft that his Republican colleagues released after weeks of secret deliberations is "devastating for America and even more devastating for New York".

As NPR's Danielle Kurtzleben reports, the BCRA is similar in many ways to the House's health care alternative, the American Health Care Act, that passed last month. "Johnson also said he is" not necessarily on board with all of the tax cuts" proposed in the bill either.

In addition, the GOP would phase out added financing that Obama's law provided as an incentive for states to expand the program and cover more low-income adults. That makes him the fifth senator to say so, the other four being Texas Sen. Three of them said they anxious it does not go far enough in repealing the ACA, known as Obamacare.

MARTIN: What parts and programs of the Affordable Care Act are most at stake with this new version of the Senate Republicans' bill? "We'll have to see".

On the other side, Collins said she and Murkowski probably will try to strip out language defunding Planned Parenthood on the floor if leaders won't do it.

Another thing the Senate credits do is that they go down to more poor people, but the credits themselves will be smaller.

The draft bill comes nearly two months after the House passed its own measure.

Trump held a victory celebration in the Rose Garden of the White House after the House vote, but since then has called the legislation "mean".
