Dozens arrested after disability advocates protest at McConnell's office

Several journalists and other people at McConnell's office tweeted the chaotic events as they unfolded, showing that numerous protesters who were removed were using wheelchairs and other medical devices.

Nothing shows the utter cruelty of the Republican plan to destroy health care like the images of patients dragged from their wheelchairs and arrested by Capitol Police, just for protesting this terrible bill.

The Senate health care bill, which comes after years of Republican members of Congress vowing to repeal the Affordable Care Act, makes deep cuts to Medicaid, ends the individual mandate and repeals a number of Obamacare's tax increases. The protesters rely on Medicaid to help them live and she says the health bill amounts to "tax cuts for the wealthy on the backs of people with disabilities", Barkoff said.

The Senate Republican health care bill would drastically cut Medicaid, the federal health care program for the poor.

On Thursday, just as the Senate finally released their latest version of the AHCA, a group of disabled Americans staged a "die-in" outside of the office of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) said in a statement: "We can't believe this needs to be said, but it's not okay to drag people out of wheelchairs when they're protesting legislation".

Protest organizers said several dozen people had been arrested. But Thursday's disabled demonstrators view the new Senate plan as an attack on them.

As the protest gathered, Capitol police began to assemble, taking some of the more non-compliant protesters out of the area by force.
