Daniel Ricciardo storms home to win chaotic Azerbaijan GP

Stroll kept his nose clean to maintain his eighth position at the start and moved up to seventh following a pit stop behind the safety auto on lap 13. "Vettel literally came alongside me and hit me", the Briton said.

I was thinking if it's only a ten-second penalty then they've probably got the pace to make that gap but then they said ten-second stop-go, I was like alright.

Valtteri Bottas of Mercedes, who came in second in the F1 race, received the second place trophy from Azerbaijan's Minister of Youth and Sports Azad Rahimov.

"It was a insane race, we knew the podium was a chance after the restart but then we heard the problems with Lewis and Seb", he said, referring to an unscheduled stop for leader Hamilton's loose headrest and a penalty for second-placed Vettel.

"Did I think I would win today?"

Crazy. You can be more effusive in your attempt to describe the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, the eighth round of the 2017 FIA Formula 1 World Championship, but the the word "crazy" just seems as apt as it is succinct.

"I'm honestly speechless after the race, on the cool down lap I was just giggling like a little schoolboy".

In a stop-start race, the safety auto came out three times in quick succession before a red flag stopped the grand prix near the midway point because debris littered the track.

"He brake tested me", yelled Vettel over the team radio.

When the race finally did start again - on lap 20 - Vettel just about held off the Williams cars of Felipe Massa and Stroll.

After 23 minutes, the race re-started at 6:15 p.m. local time behind a safety auto - and Raikkonen and Perez were back in, albeit at the back of the grid.

Hamilton, who led for much of a race that was red-flagged on lap 21 as the street circuit was cleared of debris, suffered his misfortune on the 32nd of 51 laps.

Then, the race order changed again as Vettel came in for his time penalty moments after Hamilton changed his headrest.

Stroll looked on course for second until a recovering Bottas picked off the cars ahead of him to snatch the place from the Canadian by just 0.104 seconds. The long and wide main straight played its part in allowing cars to get close enough to attempt overtaking moves at the start-finish line.

Stroll's second straight points scoring finish and first ever podium sees him shoot up to 12th in the standings.

The race also saw Fernando Alonso finish ninth to claim McLaren's first points of the season.
