Pence had attended Focus on the Family's 40th anniversary celebration Friday, then visited area military bases and reportedly met privately with billionaire conservative donor Charles Koch at the Broadmoor resort.

The group Unite Colorado Springs has planned to greet the Vice President in clothing referencing the dystopian novel, The Handmaid's Tale. The radio drama series is produced by Focus on the Family.

"Under this president's leadership, life is winning in America", Pence said.

The absence of overt anti-LGBT rhetoric may indicate that Pence and Trump know it doesn't go over well with many Americans, although it would with the Focus audience.

Speaking at an event held by the group in Colorado, Pence congratulated them on 40 years of work and promised that they "have an unwavering ally in President Donald Trump".

Vice President Mike Pence is in Colorado Springs for his first trip back to Olympic City USA since the campaign trail last fall.

Pence also talked about his personal connection to Focus on the Family.

Before Pence took the stage, Focus on the Family president Jim Daly announced that the group would donate an ultrasound machine to a crisis pregnancy center in IN in the vice president's honor.

For many evangelicals, Pence represents a champion of their values in Washington. Her husband, Paul Pasnow, agreed that he was an incredible speaker.

Vice President Pence also toured the National Space Defense Center and the Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station.

Despite the large group of attendees, around 30 protesters gathered outside of the building Pence spoke at before his speech began.

The 1985 novel by Margaret Atwood depicts a fundamentalist society that treats women as property. "Focus on the Family has fostered an environment of hostility towards the Colorado Springs LGBTQ community for decades, not to mention its promotion of strict "traditional" gender roles, creationism in public schools, school prayer, and abstinence-only sex education". "Today, we are here to say no and to advocate for our right to access resources, to healthcare, and help for our community".
