Martha the mastiff crowned the world's ugliest dog

Martha won the World's Ugliest Dog Contest in Petaluma, Calif., beating out 13 other very homely pups to claim the crown on Friday.

Martha's win sees her owner, Shirley Zindler, walk away with $1,500 (1,340 euros), a shiny trophy and a trip to NY for media appearances for her and her pooch.

According to NBC news, Martha was rescued from the Dogwood Animal Rescue Project in Santa Rose and was almost blind when she was younger.

"We're proud to celebrate all dogs and pets by showing that no matter their imperfections, they are adoptable, lovable and a great addition to any family", says Erin Post, CEO of the Sonoma-Marin Fair, where the contest is held.

The criteria the dogs are judged on include audience reaction, first impressions and unusual attributes.

A blind Chihuahua-Chinese Crested mix named Sweepee Rambo won the 2016 competition.

She was rescued when she was almost blind.

The annual event brings together the most unattractive hounds from all over the world and this year's contest is no different. Martha, a Neapolitan mastiff, competes while being escorted by Shirley Zindler in the World's Ugliest Dog Contest at the Sonoma-Marin Fair on Friday, June 23, 2017, in Petaluma, Calif. Martha was named the victor of the contest.

And while each canine contestant had its own unsightly features, all of them had heartwarming stories, from neglect and abandonment to disabilities and surgeries.

'He's my sexy boy, ' Vicky Adler, of Davis, California, said of her eight-year-old Chinese Crested named Zoomer.

This is the 29th year the contest is being held at the Sonoma-Marin Fair.
