Congress hopes JD (U) changes stance, supports Bihar's 'daughter' Meira Kumar

We have a lot of respect for "Bihar ki beti". I do not agree with their present strategy on presidential election.

"Meira Kumar is an ideal candidate. It is a battle of ideologies", Mr Raja said. The Opposition had announced that she will be their joint candidate against Kovind, who has the backing of the BJP's NDA allies and other parties, including JD (U), TDP, TRS and the two factions of AIADMK. He said Ms Kumar is not just the daughter of Jagjivan Ram but is also personally talented. "There was a belief that Nitish Kumar would not jeopardize the government".

Earlier, Lalu said that Nitish was doing a "mistake" by supporting Kovind, adding that he would try to convince him to rethink on the same.

The Bihar chief minister had apparently told a senior Opposition leader as early as on June 3 that he is ready to back Gopalkrishna Gandhi's candidature when they met at an event in Chennai to mark DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi's birthday.

However, JD (U) leader Shayam Rajak said JD (U) is part of the Grand Alliance and it will not join the NDA. "Had they been really serious about getting Meira Kumar anointed as President, they should have focused on doing well in the 2019 polls so that they could ensure her election in 2022".

This will be the first time that a BJP leader will occupy the Rashtrapati Bhawan – if all goes according to plan – as the partys previous victorious presidential candidate, APJ Abdul Kalam, did not have a party background.

"If these values are undermined so is our Constitution, and India can then not hope to achieve the progressive modernity envisioned by its founding fathers and reflected in the collective will of its people", said Meira Kumar, appealing to members of the Electoral College to base their decision on "these cherished principles and secure them for our future generations". We have selected a candidate who has contributed to the nation and dedicated her life to parliamentary democracy.

Former Lok Sabha speaker Meira Kumar was on Thursday announced as the Opposition' Presidential nominee. "There is a feeling that some non-Congress contender should have been considered", the sources said.
