Who is Opposition's presidential nominee Meira Kumar? All you need to know

Former Lok Sabha speaker Meira Kumar was on Thursday announced as the Opposition' Presidential nominee.

"We have to uphold the values enshrined in our Constitution", said the NDA's candidate who will face the Opposition candidate and former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had earlier said that the Opposition was a divided house over the Presidential elections as many of its partners have extended support to ruling NDA candidate.

However, dashing the Opposition's hope, the JD (U) rejected Lalu Prasad's request to reconsider its support to the NDA's presidential nominee, saying its stand is based on merit and it will stick it.

Asserting that there is nobody better suited for the post than Kovind, Naidu said, "Majority of the political parties have rallied behind Shri Ram Nath Kovind".

Hasan feels that the Opposition's decision to field Kumar, a senior politician of some standing, after having served as a Union minister and later as a speaker, is a good choice and puts the likes of Nitish Kumar in a fix. It was a decision taken on merit after due application of mind and full consultation within the party. The decision was taken after 17 Opposition parties met in the national capital today to pick their candidate.

"Nitish Kumar has committed a historic blunder by announcing his support to the NDA's Ppresidential candidate...he still has time to correct it", Prasad told the media. She then gave the floor to NCP leader Sharad Pawar, who said the names of three Dalit leaders - Kumar, former minister Sushilkumar Shinde and former Maharashtra MP Bhalchandra Mungekar - had been discussed for the top post.

"It was RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav who pitched for Kumar". "We have made a decision to field the name of Meira Kumar for the Ppresidential election". Earlier, Nitish had chose to break ranks with the Opposition by announcing his support for Kovind. "We think not", he said.

"Even I am proud of Bihar ki beti".

She also thanked the 17 opposition parties for supporting her candidature and said she is delighted by the opposition unity that represents the coming together of forces which have a strong ideological base.

While these developments were happening, in U.P the arch-rival SP and BSP supported the opposition party and did not go along with JD (U) way which is with Kovind.

The Left: Though the parties were initially backing Mahatma Gandhi's grandson Gopal Krishna Gandhi or BR Ambedkar's grandson Prakash Ambedkar, they have finally agreed to rally behind Meira.
