David Bailey, a Capitol Hill police officer who was part of Scalise's security detail and helped bring down the shooter, also was injured in the Wednesday incident but had recovered enough to throw the game's ceremonial first pitch.

For the game, which began in 1909, members of the Senate and House of Representatives donned uniforms representing teams from their constituencies, and many topped them with hats from Louisiana State University, Scalise's alma mater, as a tribute.

Rep. Steve Scalise is still in critical condition, but his health is improving, the Congressman's surgeon said two days after Scalise was shot at a practice for the Congressional Baseball Game.

Rep. Steve Scalise was shot June 14, 2017 in Alexandria, Virginia, a House colleague told CNN, in what sources are calling an apparent "deliberate attack".

Scalise is said to be somewhat responding to medical staff and family, according to the doctors.

A single rifle wound caused "substantial damage" to Scalise's internal organs and blood loss, his doctor explained Friday.

Scalise, 51, a Louisiana Republican who is the No. 3 House Republican, remained in critical condition at a hospital a few miles from the stadium after undergoing a third surgery on Thursday.

A Secret Servicer officer was injured Wednesday evening by a vehicle he was trying to stop from disrupting President Donald Trump's motorcade back from the hospital where two victims of the attack on a congressional baseball practice are being treated.

Trump said Friday his "dear friend", Scalise, "took a bullet for all of us". The hospital says Scalise "will require additional operations, and will be in the hospital for some time".

Scalise will undergo more operations.

"He was in critical condition with an imminent risk of death", Sava said.

"Most importantly, we are forever grateful for the heroism of Special Agents Crystal Griner and David Bailey, who saved the lives of everyone at the baseball field that morning, including Steve's", Scalise's wife, Jennifer, said in the statement.

The president says that because of the "tremendous pain and suffering he's now enduring. our country will perhaps become closer, more unified".

Trump added that Scalise is "having a hard time, far worse than anybody thought" following the shooting Wednesday. Scalise was hit as a gunman sprayed bullets into a GOP congressional baseball practice outside Washington D.C.

I would also like to personally thank all of the first responders who bravely assisted at the scene, as well as the entire staff of MedStar Washington Hospital Center for their continued excellent care.
