Can Tho hosts third global yoga day

More than 1,500 people in the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho took part in the third International Yoga Day on June 17. The Indiatourism offices overseas are organising and playing a prominent role in the organising of International Day of Yoga celebrations in the countries under their jurisdictions.

Meanwhile, the city is covered with hoardings of PM with his appeal asking people to take part in the International Yoga day.

Despite the growing awareness regarding the benefits gained by doing yoga, a paper authored by ASSOCHAM Social Development Foundation revealed that India faces a shortage of over three lakh yoga instructors. "This (Yoga) is India's prescription of wellness to the world", he further added.

Speaking at the ceremony, Indian Ambassador to Vietnam Parvathaneni Harish said that Yoga has been even more popular worldwide since the United Nations General Assembly chose June 21 as the International Yoga Day following the proposal of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

It was heartening to watch the envoy perform yoga together with Deputy Chief of Mission Reenat Sandhu, Minister of Community Affairs Mr. N.K. Mishra, and several other Indian Embassy officials. "Yoga should be respected and accepted on global level", said Yoga Guru Ramdev.

Prime Minister Modi-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) Government has made grand plans for the day.

The discussion covered the concept of yoga as the union of body, soul and mind, as well as its 5,000 years of history.

The events are being organised in association with Arya Samaj, iBAM Org, India House, Hindu Swyansevak Sangh, Brahma Kumaris, HTW-EYS, VYASA, ISHA Foundation, Art of Living Foundation, Hindus of Greater Houston, Ismaili Council, Prayala Yoga, Ekal Vidyalaya and Patanjali Yogpeeth.

For the first time ever, the Embassy, in collaboration with the Ministry of AYUSH and the Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga (MDNIY) has invited a group of 20 young Yoga ambassadors with expertise in performing advanced routines in "Hatha Yoga".
