Uber CEO planning to take time away from the company

"Thank you so much everyone for all of the kind messages today", Fowler, who is now the editor-in-chief of Increment, a publication for payments company Stripe, tweeted. Holder urged Uber to devote more resources and managerial support to the HR team, and to make it easier for employees to report misbehavior through a standardized complaint process.

The former Uber engineer whose shocking account of her experience of sexism and harassment at the company has a message for other would-be whistleblowers.

While the company has recently hired two high profile women, Harvard cultural change expert Frances Frei and Apple branding expert Bozoma Saint James, its leadership ranks already have two other executives that have been unabashed supporters of Kalanick. Kalanick did not disclose a return date, but said he's leaving to grieve his mother, work on himself, and build a better company.

The board also recommended adding independent directors and replacing its chairman, co-founder Garrett Camp, with an independent chairman.

The company released the report moments after Kalanick's temporary leave was announced, detailing 47 separate suggestions to improve the company's culture-the first of which begins, "Review and Reallocate the Responsibilities of Travis Kalanick". "But if we are going to work on Uber 2.0, I also need to work on Travis 2.0 to become the leader that this company needs and that you deserve".

For the last eight years my life has always been about Uber. The company's board unanimously adopted all of the recommendations Sunday. The report said there needed to be a more professional work environment, and suggested restricting reimbursement of alcohol-related events and prohibiting romantic relationships within the same chain of command. It calls for some of Kalanick's duties to be reallocated and emphasises the importance of the company's plan to hire a chief operating officer.

Board member Arianna Huffington has repeatedly sung Kalanick's praises and dismissed the notion of him being asked to step down. Holder recommended that Uber use performance reviews to hold senior managers accountable by setting metrics for improving diversity and responsiveness to employee complaints. His sabbatical will contribute to a leadership void at Uber, as more than a dozen executives have left the company this year alone. "Uber is examining the issues with its culture, making significant changes and working to right what has been done wrong, which is extremely important for the future of the company".

"She was one of the calls to arms that helped alert the world to the awful dysfunction and unhinged environment that was going on in that company", Schiffer said.
