Swift creator leaves Tesla as a computer vision expert joins the company

"Turns out that Tesla isn't a good fit for me after all", he tweeted recently. Andrej Karpathy will work as Director of AI and Autopilot Vision, reporting directly to Elon Musk and working with Jim Keller, who directs both hardware and software efforts at Tesla.

Lattner spent 12 years at Apple, having started as a senior compiler engineer in June 2005, before joining Tesla in January this year.

Over the period, we have seen some significant changes to the leadership of the Autopilot of Tesla, along with a shuffle in the software team of the company.

Tesla announced it's bringing on board Andrej Karpathy, formerly a research scientist at OpenAI.

The race to be the first to develop truly autonomous cars isn't over yet, and Tesla might risk losing its lead in the midst of rotating leadership.

"Chris just wasn't the right fit for Tesla, and we've decided to make a change", A Tesla spokesperson wrote in a statement.

"In spite of this distraction, we've made great progress these last few months and are excited to now focus all of our energy on making transportation safer and better for all", Sterling wrote in a Medium post.

Tesla took no time figuring out a replacement.

Tesla has hired deep learning and computer vision expert Andrej Karpathy in a key Autopilot role. He completed a PhD in computer vision at Stanford University. Andrej has worked to give computers vision through his work on ImageNet, as well as imagination through the development of generative models, and the ability to navigate the internet with reinforcement learning. Karpathy is a veteran of Alphabet Inc.'s Google, with expertise in deep learning. He also has extensive background in AI-related fields. Tesla has claimed that all cars now being made at the company's factory in Fremont, California, have the hardware needed for full self-driving capability.
