"A year ago [Monday], 49 of our brothers and sisters were brutally massacred at the Pulse Nightclub in Orlando". The shooting, which took place on June 12th of last year, saw twenty-nine year-old Omar Mateen enter into Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando, and went on a rampage that left forty-nine people dead and fifty-eight injured. At 2:02 a.m., the time of the shooting, all 49 names were read.

"It has to be remembered by all of us, because the hate is happening right now". Mr. Smith also said that ensuring that guns do not get into the hands of people who should not have them should be a top priority.

Church bells throughout the Orlando area rang 49 times at noon.

On the first anniversary of the worst mass shooting in modern United States history, officials asked Americans to join in acts of "love and kindness" to honour victims of the three-hour rampage at the now-shuttered Pulse club, including survivors still reeling from emotional and physical wounds.

The Pulse nightclub itself has since been surrounded by various tributes, and will now be turned into a permanent memorial. CNN reported that attendees wore "We will not let hate win" shirts and people lined up to donate blood. "I live to love", he told me.

Linda Royster lives in Bridgewater and is a member of the LGBT community.

Tonight, thousands attended memorial services to remember those lives lost.

Mateen's wife, Noor Salman, is facing charges of aiding and abetting and obstruction in federal court. She was not present for the shooting and has pleaded not guilty.
