Second arrest made in investigation into death of Ellen Higginbottom

"This is a very fast moving and developing investigation but I can confirm that this afternoon we have arrested a 47-year-old man", he told reporters.

Speaking at the weekend, Higginbottom's grandfather Derek Goldstraw, 80, said: "I can't stop crying". "Formal identification has yet to take place and we are keeping an open mind at this stage".

She added: "Her contribution to our college was fantastic".

Police and residents joined the effort to locate Ellen, who was last seen at Winstanley College at around 1pm on Friday.

The body of Ellen Higginbottom was discovered in Orrell Water Park at about 2.30am on Saturday.

Two girls reported that a pair of men had followed them in the park the day before.

She was one of those people who lit up the room.

Her failure to return was described as "extremely out of character".

The teenager's boyfriend, Ryan Warren, 18, who had spent hours speaking to drivers at Wigan bus station as part of the search, was yesterday too distraught to talk at his home in Warrington. My thoughts are with Ellen's family and friends. Her father Mike, an IT expert, told a newspaper his daughter had dreamed of becoming a doctor.

DS Millington vowed to leave "no stone unturned" as they hunt the woman's killer.

Det Supt Howard Millington from Greater Manchester Police said: "It is unimaginable what Ellen's family and friends must be going through right now and my thoughts continue to be with them throughout all of this".

Police said his address was being searched and there was a large police presence in the area.

'I must thank the public for their overwhelming support during this investigation so far. Don't worry that you'll be wasting my time, any bit of information, no matter how small could be vital in this fast moving investigation.

"The post-mortem has now taken place and we have a clearer picture of what may have happened to Ellen, but we are still piecing together her exact movements in the lead-up to her death".
