Atari may re-release classic Atari console

On Friday, Atari's CEO confirmed that the company is indeed building a new console but he didn't explain why anyone should care.

In a surprise move, Atari has announced that it's returning to hardware business with a brand new console. Right now there is no way to say if the upcoming "Ataribox" will put up with today's super technological and modern gaming consoles.

Given Atari's expansive library of IP, it wouldn't be surprising if the company opted to mimic Nintendo by creating an HD box bundled in with a bunch of retro games.

The CEO also revealed that this product has been "years in the making", and that it's going to have woodgrain paneling much like the Atari machines of years past. The feat of Nintendo's retro console was welcomed warmly by gamers.

Prior to the rise of Nintendo, Atari was synonymous with gaming having released its first console, the Atari 2600, in 1977.

Maybe Atari will blow some minds. Consider the fact that Microsoft is one of the most successful companies in the world, it spent $US100 ($131) million just developing the Xbox One's controller and it's still in third place.

Therefore, the main companies in the business have been very active in the last years.

We've reached out to Atari for further details, and we'll update this article with any information we receive.
