Wife of congressional baseball shooting suspect tells of disbelief

Richard Wagner, chief deputy of the St. Clair County, Ill., Sheriff's Dept., said there was nothing in Hodgkinson's record that would prevent him from legally owning firearms in IL.

The wife of a man who shot a USA congressman and four others at a baseball field in Alexandria, Virginia said she had no idea he was going to the Washington D.C. area to commit such a horrific act, KTVI in St. Louis reports.

They are Reps. Scot DesJarlais (R-TN) (pronounced day-zharr-LAY), Trent Franks (R-AZ), Jeff Duncan (R-SC), Jim Jordan (R-OH), Mo Brooks (R-AL) and Morgan Griffith (R-VA).

About 15 to 25 people were at Simpson Field in Alexandria for the baseball practice when the gunman opened fire, eyewitnesses said.

In this April 17, 2012, photo, James Hodgkinson of Belleville protests outside of the United States Post Office in Downtown Belleville, Ill.

A federal enforcement official who is not authorized to speak publicly told USA TODAY that the members' names were recovered from the the gunman.

"It's time for all of us, including myself, to tone down our rhetoric and recognize that we are all of one country and all proud Americans", he said.

Hodgkinson, was shot by police and later died of his wounds. "I can't wrap my head around it, OK?"

Congressman Steve Scalise, the most seriously wounded, is in critical condition following several surgeries.

"He seemed like a loner", said Mr William Euille, a former Alexandria mayor who came to know Hodgkinson during regular morning stops at the YMCA. She says she learned her husband was involved when she received a call from a news reporter.

Hodgkinson was killed by police during the shooting.

A reporter asked her about a rumor that her husband was planning on returning home in the coming days.

Those who knew him around Belleville have said nothing suggested he was capable of the attack on members of Congress, in spite of his often stated, very strong, and well-documented anti-Republican views.

"Nobody would have survived without the Capitol Hill police", Paul said on CNN.

According to the Daily Beast, a police report from the daughter's friend, Aimee Moreland, said the adopted daughter hated living with Hodkinson and tried to escape countless times. He had been a vocal opponent of the Republican Party.

Pelosi also cited past remarks by Trump, saying, "You have a president who says, 'I could shoot someone on Fifth Avenue and nobody would care'". Apparently, Hodgkinson failed to recognize Rep. Duncan or lost the nerve to confront him, but thankfully the Clinton, SC Congressman left the parking lots minutes before the shooting started.

In 2006, Hodgkinson was arrested on assault charges and threatening someone with a shotgun.
