Rifle-wielding gunman wounds lawmaker, then killed by police

Rep. Jeff Duncan, R-S.C., said he feels adequately protected at the Capitol complex and feels no need to carry a gun.

The security contingent was there because of who was practicing this morning: House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, who was working with his fellow Republicans to sharpen their batting and fielding. Elected in 2008, he represents a district in Louisiana that includes New Orleans suburbs and the southwest part of the state.

U.S. Rep. Jeff Duncan, R-S.C., was at the Congressional baseball practice but left before the shooter later identified by authorities as 66-year-old James T. Hodgkinson, of IL, opened fire.

In a statement, Mika's family said he was shot multiple times, was in critical condition and was now in surgery. Mika is director of government relations for Tyson Foods Washington, DC, office and has worked for the company for more than six years.

Congress members helped apply a tourniquet to the injured leg of Zachary Barth, legislative correspondent for Rep. Roger Williams of Texas, as the shooting continued.

Rosenstein says in a statement that his thoughts are with the victims and their families, and he is praying for their swift recovery.

"Authorities are searching his home in IL".

Ryan condemned the shooting and praised the Capitol police on the House floor later Wednesday.

There are 238 Republicans in the House, but 217 voted for a bill that would repeal and replace President Barack Obama's health law. As Democratic Speaker of the House Tip O'Neill once famously told Republican President Ronald Reagan, "After 6 o'clock we can be friends; but before 6, it's politics".

Republicans and Democrats were practicing at separate parks Wednesday morning to prepare for their annual game for charity set for Thursday night.

It's an annual tradition in which aging former Little Leaguers don their spikes and dust off their gloves in a game played for bragging rights and to benefit several charities. Nathan was only about 100 yards away from the shooting, but could not see the gunman. "There was a trail of blood. That's what makes our country great, but I'm here because we're all Americans". For years Jim Bunning, a former major league player who once threw a flawless game for the Philadelphia Phillies, used to dominate for the Republicans, as did Hall of Fame NFL player Steve Largent. Officials said several other people, including members of Scalise's security team, were also wounded. They were both shot, but are in stable condition. Police started returning fire.

'Police say they got here in about three or four minutes and I'm sure that's the case but it's a long time. But I didn't take a picture of him and I heard somebody yell 'Get in the dugout!' And, the gunfire rang out. Barton said his son, Jack, got under an SUV. House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy told reporters that Scalise was out of surgery.

"Many lives would have been lost if not for the heroic actions of the two Capitol Police officers, who took down the gunman despite sustaining gunshot wounds during a very very brutal assault", Trump said shortly before noon.

At some point, Flake says, it seemed that the shooter dropped his rifle and began using a handgun. Everyone on that field is a public servant - our courageous police, our congressional aides who work so tirelessly behind the scenes with enormous devotion, and our dedicated members of Congress who represent our people.

"I'm grateful that Special Agent Griner is in good condition in the hospital having been shot in the ankle, and Special Agent Bailey was treated and released having sustained a minor injury during the incident", Verderosa said in a statement.
