Her father was an Italian travel agent and artist, while her mother was a German secretary. Their daughter became fluent in four languages at an early age.

My sources say Pallenberg "passed away with her family around her".

An It Girl of the 1960s and 1970s, she was largely associated with Andy Warhol's Factory and embodied the style and spirit of the era.

"I could make a living out of it and that's basically what I did, but I was not like the models of today", Pallenberg told the Guardian newspaper in 2008.

In later life she returned to education as a mature student, completing in 1994 a four-year fashion course at Central Saint Martins in London, her adopted home. However, she decided not to embark on a career in fashion as she found the industry to be very cruel.

Pallenberg appeared in more than a dozen movies.

She also appeared in a number of other films, including Barbarella. Pallenberg and Jagger would later star together in Nicolas Roeg's 1970 crime drama Performance.

Pallenberg battled drug addiction for much of her life but said in 2014 that she had been sober from drugs for 14 years.

She dated Rolling Stones guitarist Brian Jones, but left him for Keith Richards.

She met former Rolling Stones guitarist Brian Jones in 1965. However, their relationship was tumultuous and the duo made a decision to split in 1980.

Moving between her native Rome, Germany and New York City, Pallenberg eventually settled in London - where she was famed for her association with The Rolling Stones.

Pallenberg first entered the Rolling Stones' orbit as Brian Jones' girlfriend before later taking up with Richards (as well as briefly with Mick Jagger).

The couple had three children together, one of whom died as an infant, before they finally separated in 1980.

Who knows what Pallenberg might have achieved if she had been born later? Three years after Tara's death, 17-year-old Scott Cantrell, a handyman with whom she had been having an affair, shot himself in her bed with a gun belonging to Richards in their NY home, adding another layer of tragedy to her public persona.

Pallenberg leaves behind two children from her 12-year relationship with Richards - son Marlon, 46, and daughter Angela, 44.

"I have never met a woman quite like you Anita", she wrote on Instagram. She was one of the kick-ass women who ruled the music scene in the 60s and 70s, so in her honour, here is a gallery of some of the coolest women ever in rock and roll.

'You showed about life and myself and how to grow and become and exist with it all.
