The Blue Jays And Mariners Were Like Sweet Children Out There

You can probably add a glorious Sunday afternoon at Safeco Park to the list.

SEATTLE (AP) — Josh Donaldson hit a two-run homer in the first inning and finished with three RBIs, J.A. Happ rediscovered the form that made him a 20-game victor last season with six shutout innings, and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Seattle Mariners 4-0 on Sunday.

A season-high three RBIs from Josh Donaldson sparked the Blue Jays offence in support of starter J.A. Happ, a 20-game victor last season who notched his first W of 2017.

"He's blown me up in the past". He left after four innings, after giving up RBI singles to Donaldson and Kendrys Morales.

"That's really something I've never seen before on our side", Seager said of Dyson.

"He gave me a cookie, threw the ball a little bit high fastball and I took advantage of it", Morales said through an interpreter.

Unfortunately for the M's, Zych's 1-2 sinker to Eziquiel Carrera leading off the eighth didn't sink and Carrera crushed it to the right-field bleachers to regain the lead for Toronto.

The Yankees may be slugging themselves away from the rest of the AL East, but the Jays' win moved them to within 1.5 games of a wild-card spot. Haniger went 0-for-4 with a walk.

The teams play at 1 p.m. Sunday, with James Paxton (5-0, 1.39) pitching for Seattle opposite J.A. Happ (0-4, 5.33).

The Blue Jays struck again in the fourth, as Pillar doubled with two outs and Donaldson drove him home with a single to right.

Mariners starter James Paxton took his first loss of the season. Toronto is 30-32 overall and 13-18 on the road. The situation was made worse by the fact that he was banned from his senior year at the University of Kentucky after then Jays president Paul Beeston talked publicly about negotiations with Paxton's agent, Scott Boras.

That's a no-no under NCAA rules, and Paxton headed to the Independent League for a season, after which he was drafted 132nd overall by the Mariners in the 2010 draft.

Paxton had been superior both before and after the forearm-strain injury that put him on the disabled list, but struggled against a Jays lineup that combines patience with power. Happ, the 20-game victor from a year ago, had eight strikeouts in six shutout innings for his first win of 2017.

"I felt more like myself today", Happ said.

Happ said he was also emboldened by being staked to an early 2-0 lead. He has pitched more than 5 1/3 innings just once since April 15.

"It's easier to do that when you've got a couple of points on the board".

A weekend road trip to Seattle felt like a home game back in Toronto.

They play four games at Minnesota and three at Texas.

Gibbons is right: If the Jays are to be serious playoff contenders, they'll need to score by other means.

Having played in the Majors for 14 years now, Jose Bautista knows a thing or two about the importance of keeping a play alive.

"We love home runs".
