Fowler homers as Cardinals sweep Phillies with 6-5 win

Carlos Martinez has been waiting for this moment.

As of Saturday, consider that theory to be a shattered myth.

The St. Louis Cardinals' ace right-hander struck out 11 and beat the Philadelphia Phillies 7-0 on Saturday, the first shutout and first complete game of his career.

Nick Pivetta got the start, and lasted five innings, allowing four runs on four hits and four walks. His last strikeout was on a 100 miles per hour fastball to Howie Kendrick on his 101st pitch of the game.

Maikel Franco turned in yet another 0-4. He also walked three. "This was one of my goals, one of my dreams". And I just feel so happy with my performance. I'm living out my dream. The next one is to pitch a flawless game.

Aaron Nola allowed three earned runs over five innings Sunday in a loss to the Cardinals. The Phillies' hitters have hit.341 against Wacha collectively in their careers.

"We came limping home, I think that was more than obvious", Matheny said. "It's just a matter of if he can control it the whole game".

Martinez picked up a strikeout in every inning but the seventh. During that span, he's gone 0-3 with an 11.91 ERA in 11.1 innings. Only twice in 32 hitters did he go to three-ball counts, so precise were his pitches. Their record drops to 21-39. I like Nola over Wainwright and with Philly receiving plus odds, I'll roll the dice on the underdog.

Wainwright (7-4) gave up six hits, struck out four and walked two, bouncing back nicely from a rough start at Cincinnati on Tuesday.

The Cubs' Ian Happ breaks his bat as he fouls out to end the sixth inning against the Colorado Rockies at Wrigley Field on Friday. Matt Carpenter singled and went to third on Dexter Fowler's double.

Pivetta allowed four hits and four runs, picking up a pair of strikeouts. Abreu's fifth-inning sacrifice fly put Chicago ahead, but Encarnacion's blast gave Cleveland the lead for good. He is expected to return to the lineup on Tuesday, according to manager Mike Matheny.

Martinez rode it all the way to a personal goal.

"A big momentum-shifter right there", Pham said.

Catcher Yadier Molina was in the original lineup on Saturday but pulled again because of lower back stiffness he incurred while he was sleeping, Matheny said. It's just the ninth time in 60 games that Molina hasn't started this year. He was injured making a throw on Friday night. The Yankees now lead the American League (AL) East by three games over the Red Sox and four-and-a-half over Baltimore.

Getting back in the win column was big for Michael Wacha and the St. Louis Cardinals. It was just the second time this season they did it in the same game; the first was on April 27 in the nightcap of a doubleheader with Toronto.
