US Catholics join pope in praying for victims of London attacks

"The vigil of Pentecost had barely begun when the world was burdened yet again, this time by the sinister attacks on innocent men and women in the heart of London", Cardinal Daniel N. DiNardo of Galveston-Houston, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, said in an early June 4 statement. "You couldn't really see it, because there was so much blood around his head, but I searched around with my hands, and it was on the back of his head".

In his homily, he reminded both pastors and faithful alike that "the Spirit is the first gift of the risen Lord, and is given above all for the forgiveness of sins". "If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them".

Right after the death of Jesus, the apostles go in hiding for fear of their lives. Jesus their master who rose from the dead and had never abandoned them. The Lord Jesus told them, "Peace be with you. It is also to ask for a heart that feels that the Church is our Mother and our home, an open and welcoming home where the manifold joy of the Holy Spirit is shared".

Rev. Irby: The Holy Spirit is considered the third person of the Holy Trinity. All throughout the Old Testament, we see the Holy Spirit in various ways and used various people, especially the Prophets.

Pentecost is generally celebrated 50 days (or Seven Sundays) after Easter Sunday and is derived from the Jewish celebration of the Festival of Weeks. Hence, the name Pentecost.

The pope then talked about the 50 years of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal, calling it "a current of the grace of the Spirit!" "The same Spirit creates diversity and unity, and in this way forms a new, diverse and unified people: the universal Church". "Now when this was noised overseas, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language". These people must be Jewish pilgrims, who have come from different places in the Mediterranean world to attend the Jewish feast of Pentecost. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. At this point, the Apostles already start doing their mission. Today's Scripture readings highlight two of those new things, he said: The Spirit makes the disciples "a new people" and creates in them "a new heart"; he "brings all of them together in fellowship" and "gives a gift to each, and then gathers them all into unity".

What does the word Pentecost mean? . When this happens, we choose the part over the whole, belonging to this or that group before belonging to the Church.

Impelled by this witness, Francis said Christian unity was more urgent than ever as the Spirit called Christians to walk together, in prayer and acting in favor of the weakest. The Spirit-filled Church is missionary.

Being baptized in the Spirit and knowing how to praise God, he said, "are not enough" if Christians don't also help those in need.
