No matter the victor, the star of the event was 6-year-old Edith Fuller, who became the youngest contestant at the Scripps National Spelling Bee. Seventy-one spellers had spelled a word incorrectly during the two rounds of oral spelling for the preliminary competition and were eliminated.

Saketh Sundar, 11, who attends Mayfield Woods Middle School in Elkridge, Maryland, was the only D.C. -area local to advance to the first round of the finals Thursday afternoon, which consisted of 40 spellers. He tied for 41st place this year.

Daniel Chen, of Chino Hills, on Thursday correctly spelled his first word, "perinephric", but incorrectly spelled "carosella", a type of fennel, by adding an "I" instead of the "O".

"I just want to praise Jesus for getting me here", Rajeev said.

Lourcey was one of 291 participants in the preliminary rounds, and one of 188 who made it through the two onstage rounds Wednesday.

The kindergarten student from Oklahoma told reporters that she hopes to invent a new kind of refrigerator. "She did well and we're pleased".

"We've been having a good time sightseeing and having a lot of fun while we're here", Amy Blackburn said.
