Armed Man At Orlando International Airport In Custody

The incident was first reported about 7:24 p.m. Officers responded and cleared the first floor of Terminal A, airport spokeswoman Carolyn Fennell told the Sentinel.

The suspect faces a charge of aggravated assault with a firearm and is being held for a mental health evaluation.

Police said the gunman was in custody and "everyone is safe".

No one was hurt, but the terrifying situation created confusion and anxiety as travelers posted video and photos online showing police at the airport with their weapons drawn. Orlando police later tweeted that entrances were open but congested.

Authorities said earlier that no shots had been fired.

The Orlando Police Department said on its Twitter feed that said no arrests have been made, after a local TV news station said the suspect had been taken into custody.

Orlando police urged people not to put out unconfirmed information on Tuesday night during what appeared to be a chaotic scene at the airport. The airport's official Twitter account posted about the incident, saying that police are now on the scene after an armed man was spotted in the Level 1, A-side of the rental vehicle area.

The area was contained and should have minimal impact to the airport's operations, officials said.

All roads leading into the airport have been shut down.
