Microsoft takes its databases worldwide with Cosmos DB

"While most database services force you to choose between strong or eventual consistency, Azure Cosmos DB is the only globally distributed database service which offers five well-defined, intuitive consistency choices - so you can select just the right one for your app".

At the Microsoft developer conference, Seattle for Build 2017, Satya Nadella, Scott Guthrie and Harry Shum, have announced that there are 500 million devices that are using Windows 10.

To that end, the company also offered a preview of Azure IoT Edge, created to bring the benefits of the cloud to edge devices. IoT Edge can run on Windows and Linux and on devices as small as a Raspberry Pi with only 128MB of memory. Customers are most willing to consider new technology vendors when they shift from running their own computing to renting cloud services, he said.

There service also includes the Cognitive Services Labs, which enables external developers and researcher working on AI to contribute to the development of new services to the suite. Because the camera can differentiate among industrial tools and workers, it could be used in a scenario to prevent an unauthorized worker from gaining access to a jackhammer or potentially unsafe tools, for example. Logic can be tested and developed in the cloud, CI/CD pipelines can be created in the cloud, and then that exact same code can be run on devices with low latency. "Microsoft is managing the MySQL and PostgreSQL technology you know, love and expect but backed by an enterprise-grade, highly available and fault tolerant cloud services platform that allows you to focus on developing great apps versus management and maintenance", stated Sirosh.

Database is another front in the battle for cloud customers between Microsoft and Amazon, which has several products of its own in the area. The company claims that this is the first globally distributed, multi-model database service that provides horizontal scale with guaranteed uptime, throughput, and millisecond latency to the 99 percentile that is also backed by SLAs.

Microsoft announced the general availability of container support for Windows Server containers in Azure Service Fabric and previewed Service Fabric support for Docker Compose for deploying containerized apps.

Developers now can publish for Microsoft Teams, its new chat-based workspace in Office 365.

At the same time, Microsoft is pushing out a bevy of new tools for developers.

That leaves Microsoft as well as Google and others to catch up. One downside with this Android app for Azure is that you do not have access to any shell.

Microsoft is typically ranked second behind AWS in terms of the size of its facilities and business, but there is research showing that Microsoft is gaining share against AWS, King noted.

Microsoft is doubling down on the cloud, using its BUILD 2017 developer event to hammer home the idea that in a mobile- and cloud-first world, data crunching comes first. The service targets next-generation applications, such as mobile apps or workloads that rely heavily on internet of things (IoT) and artificial intelligence - and it's Microsoft's response to the other major public cloud entries into this space: Amazon Aurora and Google Cloud Spanner.
