Lavrov speaks to Tillerson about Syria chemical attack

In an interview with Sputnik issued on April 21, Syrian President Bashar Assad said intentional placing of chemicals across Syria to blame the government for lying about destroying them was a possibility.

In a 2013 deal brokered by Russian Federation and the U.S., Syria agreed to destroy its chemical weapons stockpiles.

Assad went on to hit out at the USA government for recent actions in Syria, stating: "we all know that the American officials say something and do something different, they're never committed to their promises or their words".

"We noted the very clear and forthright words, Mr. Secretary, that you had to say about Iran", Netanyahu said.

According to the official, the Israeli military was briefed in advance of the USA launch of 59 Tomahawk cruise missiles against the Al Shayrat Airbase, from which warplanes belonging to the Syrian regime carried out a chemical gas attack.

Realising the vertiginous conflict erupting in the region, Trump declared that Assad regime had crossed "many, many lines, beyond a red line" with the suspected chemical attack, and thus ordered a direct assault on the Syrian airfields that launched those weapons. Treasury already had imposed sanctions against 18 Syrian officials in January, and Mnuchin said the administration "will relentlessly pursue and shut down the financial networks of all individuals involved with the production of chemical weapons used to commit these atrocities".

Before meeting with Mattis in Yerushalayim, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu told reporters that Israel is encouraged by the change of administrations in Washington. The sectarian violence has left Syria struggling to fight ISIS and other terrorist groups while trying to maintain control of areas now under military occupation. Now we are attempting to remove Assad? “Of course till this moment they didn't send (the experts), because the West and the U.S. blocked any delegation from coming, ” he added.

As it stands, OPCW - an independent worldwide watchdog - is probing the source of the attack and is expected to issue a report within the next two weeks.

Criticizing President Barack Obama now for not attacking Assad after a 2013 chemical attack is revisionist history. Assad has regained lost territory - most importantly Syria's largest city Aleppo, captured last December. Oops. Sorry. No foreign country retaliated against us. The US participated directly in the destruction of Syria's chemical stockpiles, and the OCPW certified that all of the country's chemical weapons had been destroyed in January 2016.

Derek Chollet, former Obama administration official, told Forbe's Doug Bandow, "The administration hoped its aid to insurgents would give Washington "leverage" in dealing with its Sunni 'allies.' Yet the latter have manipulated America to serve their interests, pressing Washington to oust the Assad regime while supporting radical insurgent groups opposed by the United States".

Israel's second priority will be to keep Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps or other Iranian supported militia and forces off of its border in the North around the Golan Heights.

"There can be no doubt in the global community's mind that Syria has retained chemical weapons in violation of its agreement and its statement that it had removed them all". "I think this is welcome change, a strategic change of American leadership and American policy".
