Amid oppn protest, Kerala Minister Mani says 'didn't insult women'

Earlier, the CM had told media that MM Mani's statement was not made in good sense.

When the House assembled at 8.30 a.m, the Congress-led opposition was on its feet shouting slogans, demanding suspension of Question Hour to take up leave for an adjournment motion to discuss the "indecent" remarks of Mani.

He condemned the remarks made by Mani against the strike staged by Pembilai Orumai, a women's collective which staged a historic strike against plantation managements in Idukki in 2015.

Kottayam (Ker), Apr 25 (PTI) The BJP today chose to approach the Enforcement Directorate seeking probe against an immediate kin of Kerala Power Minister M M Mani, accusing him of indulging in illegitimate financial deals.

"I have not used the word "women" in the speech".

Responding to the opposition's call that Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan should visit Mahija, Mani said the opposition need not turn up with suggestions to this government. "He has to go", said Radhakrishnan.

Vijayan said Mani, who hails from Idukki district, had used colloquial language while addressing a function which was "distorted and 'magnified" by the media.

They intensified their agitation Tuesday by launching an indefinite fast to press for their demand. My words have been twisted out of context.

The opposition leader also asked why Mr. Mani bothered to express regrets over his remarks the other day if he had said nothing untoward.

Mani's remarks allegedly questioning the character of women activists, who had previous year held a series of protests against plantation companies, have invited widespread criticism from many quarters including his own party leaders. Mani was also unsparing in his criticism of IAS officer Sreeram Venkitaraman, who is involved in removing encroachments in Idukki, Mani's home district. Some vested interests have blown it out of proportion to make political capital out of it.

Outside the assembly, Youth Congress and Kerala Students Union (the student body of Congress) activists held a protest march, breaking police barricades and the protestors were dispersed with a water cannon.
