Relay for Life: Walking with a goal

The American Cancer Society Ozark County Relay For Life event this year will be held from 4 p.m.to midnight Saturday, June 10, at Benton Breeding Stadium at Gainesville High School.

"There are so many people right here in Richmond County who have taken medications developed through American Cancer Society research", said Whitley.

"I expect the same amount or hopefully to keep getting bigger", Willis said of this year's event.

The school's basketball team was using the night to honor guard Jason Kenny's mother, Shari, who was diagnosed with breast cancer on September 8, 2016. Debbie said her team alone raised thousands of dollars through fundraisers leading up to and during the walk. "She shared with them that it's not just about cancer, it's about community", Bubnack said of Doolittle.

Students and people from the community all formed teams.

The American Cancer Society's mission is to save lives, celebrate lives, and lead the fight for a world without cancer.

Emily says that aside from the fact that it's a great cause, she loves Relay for Life because of how fun it is. We lined the steps to Leatherby (Libraries) with them.

A special evening activity, the Luminaria ceremony, also takes place and serves as a meaningful opportunity for students to share how cancer has touched their life.

On Sunday, Relay for Life organizers will be on hand to sell luminaires, which can be purchased in honor of a survivor or in memory of a loved one who passed, which are then illuminated at dusk during the event next month.

What is Relay for Life?

"I was diagnosed with breast cancer October 23 of 2015, and so I am a survivor", she said. She was an incredible person and the matriarch of our family. The events will raise funds to support the American Cancer Society.

Shari and Jason, 19, joined about 30 survivors and their caregivers for the first lap of the relay. "I hope we are bursting at the seams because I want everyone to come and experience it".
