Gunman kills three in downtown Fresno

In his twisted mind, white people had to die.

Race is what drove a homeless African-American man in Fresno to shoot and kill three white men on Tuesday - bringing his homicide total to four since last week, the city's police chief said during a news conference.

"Dyer says Muhammad's Facebook page contains numerous anti-government posts and claims of hating white people".

"There is every reason to believe he acted alone", Chief Dyer said, adding that there is no evidence so far to suspect a terrorism motive. "We it is a hate crime".

Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer says suspect Kori Ali Muhammad spent hours talking with investigators after his arrest.

Shortly after, Muhammad saw a Fresno Police vehicle approaching, and he surrendered.

I'd never seen Kori crying before, well not since he's been grown. Dyer said he dropped two necklaces he had been holding that he said were charms to ward off evil and gave himself up to police.

Muhammad sought to kill as many white people as possible, Dyer said.

Phyllis Cervantes, right, says a prayer for Tuesday's shooting victims at a memorial of candles and flowers outside Catholic Charities on Wednesday, April 19, 2017 in Fresno, Calif.

Authorities spotted Muhammad running and took him into custody.

"He said he is Muslim, but prays to seven different gods", the police chief said. But the phrase has also been linked to terrorist attacks.

Two of the people shot outside Catholic Charities, on Fulton Street just north of downtown, may have been clients of the social service agency, not employees, Dyer said.

The victims in Tuesday's attack were not immediately identified.

Police last week released a photo of Muhammad after the security guard, 25-year-old Carl Williams, was killed last Thursday.

Francine Williams said Wednesday that she was in shock but also at peace because she got to tell her son how much she loved him and how proud he made her a few days before his death.

Grandmother Glenestene Taylor said Muhammad was acting strangely when he visited her Sunday. As she saw the circle of candles and flowers on the sidewalk, she gasped, covered her mouth, and started to cry.

"At first I thought OK, it's a real bad dream", she said. "I'll protect you. Don't you worry about it.' He really didn't want to go but he was going".

"Let black people go or the doom increases". In one of his missives, he praised skin cancer.

On Monday he wrote to Facebook "MY KILL RATE INCRESASES TREMENDOUSLY ON THE OTHER SIDE ASÈ ALLAH U AKBAR". The fanatic black nationalist told investigators he wanted to slaughter as many whites as he could.

Dyer said Muhammad showed no remorse in interviews and laughed many times.

A resident in the neighborhood encountered the shooter. When he was arrested, Dyer said Muhammad had pendants he called amulets that he said "were for the goal of protecting against evil". "If he didn't like what they did, he didn't like what they did no matter the color".

In response to being informed that shouts of "Allahu Akbar" were overheard by witnesses, the imam of the Islamic Cultural Center of Fresno stresses that that Muhammad was not a member of his center.

The Federal Bureau of Prisons says Muhammad was incarcerated at a federal penitentiary from October 2006 to September 2011 after being convicted of possessing cocaine with intent to distribute. "It would be much better for him to turn himself into the Fresno Police Department".
