Boston gets 2022 Frozen Four

"We are thrilled that Quinnipiac has once again been selected to host the NCAA Women's Frozen Four", ECAC Hockey Commissioner Steve Hagwell said.

The 2018 regionals are slated for March 23-25 and then March 29-31 in 2019.

In 2019, the East Regional will be hosted by Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, R.I., the Midwest Regional will be held at PPL Center, Allentown, Pa. and the West Regional will be played at Scheels Center, Fargo, N.D.

Penn State has been selected to host at least nine NCAA championship events over the next five years, including the 2022 women's Frozen Four and both the 2018 and 2019 men's hockey regional, the university announced Tuesday afternoon.

The exact dates for the Regionals will be announced at a later time.

It's the first time the school will host NCAA Hockey Championships with the men's and women's hockey programs having recently completed their fifth seasons as varsity programs. One, I'm a hockey fan, too.

St. Paul will host next year's Frozen Four, Buffalo hosts in 2019, Detroit in 2020 and Pittsburgh in 2021.

The bad news, Wisconsin was the last midwest regional host to make the tournament back in 2008.

"It's a great thing for the school and a great thing for the program, " said BC women's coach Randy Thomas. "It's an honor to have those efforts recognized with successful bids to host NCAA Championship events in our two newest sports and in two new, state-of-the-art facilities". Even more so because the Penn State women's team will also be hosting a regional of their own in 2022, on-campus at the Pegula Ice Arena.

This is additional incentive for the Penn State hockey team to earn a return trip to the NCAA tournament. (The men's regionals are routinely held at off-campus facilities.) The Lehigh Valley rink is almost a three-hour drive from Pegula Ice Arena, but that's still considerably closer than the last Midwest Regional that was held in Cincinnati (seven-hour drive). Rec Hall will host a National Collegiate Women's Gymnastics Regional in 2018 and 2020.

The event will be the last weekend in March.
