Benintendi leads Red Sox over Rays 4-3 on Patriots' Day

They were running out of innings to steal a win on Patriots' Day and escape Boston with a split of their four-game series.

The Rays made a key error in the second inning when second baseman Brad Miller dropped a throw from shortstop Tim Beckham that would have ended the inning.

Boston trailed 5-4 before loading the bases against Danny Farquhar (0-1), and Moreland singled off left-hander Xavier Cedeno, who already has blown three leads this season. "It's been a smooth transition. It makes you feel more comfortable".

Moreland, signed as a free agent to a $5.5 million, one-year deal, has gone 16 for 33 after opening hitless in 12 at-bats.

There was some confusion Saturday when manager John Farrell said Jackie Bradley Jr. would rejoin the team "at minimum" on Friday in Baltimore.

Pablo Sandoval gets the day off after clubbing a two-run home run in Sunday's 7-5 win over the Rays.

"I didn't catch the ball", Miller said.

"I'll be a morning person tomorrow", Snell told the Tampa Bay Times on Sunday.

Vazquez added an RBI double in the eighth against Austin Pruitt.

The bullpen responded nicely, led by Joe Kelly (2-0), who picked up the victory.

The Rays went 1-6 on the trip to NY and Boston, their only win coming when Chris Archer snapped his 11-game losing streak against the Red Sox on Friday.

The Rays got one run back in the 7th inning before Craig Kimbrel struck out the side in the ninth for his 6th save of the season.

Manager Kevin Cash said after the game that "we anticipate this will be a short stay". Overall, Snell's command was much better on Monday as he walked just two batters while striking out five. They're also 6-2 in their last eight home games and are 6-1 in Wright's last seven starts versus the AL East. Panda jumped a couple of times to celebrate with teammates on his way back to the dugout.

"It was a weird one", Cobb said. However, things would go array shortly after.

Again, there are still 150 games to be played during the regular season for the Boston Red Sox. Dustin Pedroia fouled a ball off his left ankle, limped around but stayed in the game. He needed 15 pitches to get through the frame. He also had a wild pitch. Getting the proverbial monkey off your back, I guess, is nice. They haven't had the one game with the one swing of the bat. "I just didn't have it today".

U.S. Women's hockey player Kacey Bellamy throws out a ceremonial first pitch, along with other members of the team, before a baseball game between the Boston Red Sox and the Tampa Bay Rays, Monday, April 17, 2017, in Boston.

Betts hasn't struck out in 119 plate appearances, the majors' longest stretch since Juan Pierre - then with Florida - went 147 in a row in 2004. Rays LHP Blake Snell (0-1, 3.18 ERA) opposes Red Sox RHP Steven Wright (0-1, 13.50 ERA) today in the annual Patriots' Day game at 11 a.m.

Wright gave Wakefield's worst a run for its money on Wednesday, allowing four of the 13 Orioles he faced to hit a home run before he was pulled.
